For over 40 years, through MSCI ESG Research LLC (MSCI ESG Research) and its legacy companies KLD, Innovest, IRRC, and GMI Ratings, MSCI Inc. (MSCI) has measured and modelled Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risk. As a result, MSCI is now a leading provider of ESG Research, Indexes and Analytical tools, including ESG ratings of over 13,500 issuers (including subsidiaries) as of October 2019 provided by MSCI ESG Research, and over 1,000 ESG Equity and Fixed Income Indexes provided by MSCI.
We aim to help investors integrate ESG across their entire investment process. Our broad product line is designed to support clients' needs across major asset classes and seeks to provide them with a consistent way of looking at risk and performance from front to middle office. We have a flexible business model that enables clients to select the individual products and services they need and integrate them into their own investment processes and methodologies. Our recent publication “The MSCI Principles of Sustainable Investing” offers a framework designed to illustrate specific, actionable steps for investors to improve their practices for ESG integration across the investment value chain. MSCI is fully committed to helping investors make better decisions for a better world, and the MSCI Principles of Sustainable Investing are designed to play a part towards achieving that mission.
In addition to our growing array of ESG solutions, consideration of ESG issues is an increasingly important aspect of how MSCI is managed as a business overall. To that end, in November 2018, Diana Tidd, Head of Index at MSCI, was appointed Chief Responsibility Officer (CRO). Ms. Tidd and the firm's Corporate Responsibility Committee work closely with MSCI's senior leadership team to guide and communicate ESG policies for the firm, and to oversee the governance structure for the company's ESG practices, help drive social responsibility, and extend our focus on sustainable operations. This includes how MSCI can further reduce its environmental impact and carbon footprint through its business strategy. As CRO, Ms. Tidd provides written quarterly updates and reports semi-annually to the Nominating and Governance Committee of the MSCI Board of Directors.
