RDP 02. Sources for research and/or rating

02.1. Indicate the types of sources you use for research and/or ratings of companies. Tick all that apply.

02.2. Additional information. [OPTIONAL]

RDP 03. Stakeholder input

03.1. Describe how you actively include inputs and information, wherever possible, from relevant stakeholders or interested parties, in the research process or in reaching assessment conclusions.

Our rating and verification is based chiefly on companies' self-reported information, which is then verified through documentation requests, interviews with the company, and site visits where needed. Where stakeholder risks are identified, including with employees, communities, suppliers and civil society, information from these sources is gathered and considered in the final analysis, such as through online and desk research and conversations with stakeholders.

03.2. Additional information. [OPTIONAL]

RDP 04. ESG factors in research methodology

04.1. Indicate whether your research/rating methodology incorporates ESG factors.

04.2. If yes, describe how ESG factors are incorporated into your research/rating methodology.

The full KudosAfrica assessment consists of approximately 100 self-assessment questions covering material environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks for companies operating in an African and emerging markets context. These questions are further organized into 4 themes: Commitment, Efficiency, Resilience, and Innovation (CERI), which are categories that assist in demonstrating how ESG factors drive improved business performance. The company receives points out of a total possible point allocation for each of the 4 themes. The more points the company receives the more mature they are in their management approach. The company is then verified as achieving an overall "level" of performance. There are 4 possible levels: i) the company shows awareness and commitment to ESG issues, ii) the company has put in place the necessary systems to manage material performance issues, iii) the company is improving behaviour on material ESG issues over time, and iv) the company is a leader in managing ESG issues.

RDP 05. Material ESG issues in research and/or rating

05.1. Describe how you ensure that your research and/or ratings capture material ESG issues.

ESG is embedded as a core function of our research and rating methodology

RDP 06. Up-to-date assessment and ratings

06.1. Describe how you ensure your assessment of companies is up-to-date and that new information is incorporated or new assessments are conducted at reasonable intervals.

The KudosAfrica verification is valid for one year. Thereafter companies are required to be assessed again. This also allows for monitoring performance improvements over time. In our Terms & Conditions, we require a company to immediately notify KudosAfrica of any material changes that may impact the company’s ESG rating for that year, so that we can reassess and make any required changes. We also have a formal process for addressing any grievances or new information that KudosAfrica may receive which may impact a company's ESG rating. This will start with direct contact with the company to verify the validity of information received and offer an opportunity to address performance gaps.

RDP 07. Balanced research and assessment

07.1. Indicate how you ensure a balanced approach to your research methodology and assessing/rating of companies. Tick all that apply and explain your approach to each option.
