PE 05. Incorporating ESG issues when selecting investments

05.1. During due-diligence indicate if your organisation typically incorporates ESG issues when selecting private equity investments.

05.2. Describe your organisation`s approach to incorporating ESG issues in private equity investment selection.

Following AIMCo’s Responsible Investment Policy and Private Equity Sustainability Guidelines, ESG factors are consistently given consideration when reviewing investment opportunities. We evaluate material company and sector specific ESG risks/opportunities as part of the due diligence process for direct and fund opportunities following our bespoke ESG Due Diligence Questionnaire. In addition, potential investments are screened for compliance with AIMCo's Exclusion Guidelines.

Internal and external resources are used to evaluate ESG factors. ESG are discussed during on-site diligence visits along with other variables being considered when making an investment decision. When applicable, we request in our Side Letters that the fund manager become a member of the Private Equity Growth Capital Council and endorse their guidelines for Responsible Investment.

06.1. Indicate what type of ESG information your organisation typically considers during your private equity investment selection process.

          As part of due diligence process, we consider a range of company and sector-specific material ESG risks/opportunities following the SASB materiality matrix.

06.2. Describe how this information is reported to, considered and documented by the Investment Committee or similar.

Asset specific background information, including ESG considerations, are summarized and submitted to the Investment Committee Presentation. Should an asset have International Standards organization (ISO) certification(s), a deal team would consider this as an additional and valuable assurance. Where applicable, AIMCo engages environmental and other special advisors to provide additional expertise and analysis on these types of risks.
