CBIS has been part of the PRI Corporate Bondholder Working Goup, the Oil and Gas Transition Working Group, the Water Risks in Agricultural Supply Chains Working Group. We read and distribute information on PRI events, webinars, joint letters and initiatives to our team, other CBIS staff, and external colleagues that are also PRI signatories where appropriate. We flag for PRI staff emerging issues that might enhance their ability to do their work, and seek ways to collaborate with PRI when possible--including speaking on webinars, and encouraging collaboration between PRI and other networks we belong to. We developed a 2,000 word document highlighting how we implement each of the 6 PRI Principles, to share with consultants and others. We work with PRI staff on implementation of Corporate Bondholder Engagement work and educational events, the Climate Action 100+ objectives, and supply chain/human trafficking work. We encourage our managers to become a signatory when they are not.

We are members and regularly communicate with CDP staff on reports and events. We shared information on our Chinese company engagements to get direct feedback from CDP staff in that market on approach advice and performance trends. We ask companies we engage with on climate change to report to the CDP when they do not. We occasionally serve as the lead on CDP letter-writing efforts to specific companies on CDP climate reporting or lack thereof.

Water Stewardship is a core theme of our Environmental Stewardship engagement, and we read CDP research reports to enhance that work. There is also strong collaboration between the Ceres Water Hub and CDP Water, and we are a member in the Water Hub.

Some CBIS staff are CFA members and highlight CFMI/ ESG activities happening there where appropriate. We have interviewed the CFA Institute regarding the recruitment of certain roles at CBIS.

We are active in the North American and Asian Working Groups and we coordinate with the IIGCC-led European efforts. We have endorsed the principles of the CA 100+, mentioned it in correspondence with companies and in dialogues, and co-filed CA 100-initiated shareholder proposals.100% of our focus companies for climate change engagement are part of the CA 100+, and 80% of those companies on that list we have engaged for over 10 years each. CBIS and its staff have played a critical role in ExxonMobil, Ford and BP in North America for many years. We have made concerted efforts with CA 100 companies to build bridges between leads for the companies and other investors that have deep experience engaging those same firms. We have invited CA 100 leads and supporters to our own internal engagements/meetings with these companies, and we worked with PRI in 2019 to ensure we had global collaboration on a specific Chinese company we had been engaging.

We are currently not members, but work with CII and its staff in various ways, including events, staying abreast of core corporate governance developments, and working together on shareholder rights strategies as part of the Shareholder Rights coalition. We occasionally organize events at CII, or speak on panels, and we are currently contemplating becoming members. We are well-versed in CII priorities, documents and guides, working groups and structures, and its membership.

We are not members, but stay informed of IIGCC structure, leadership, and strategy related to climate engagements in the EU since two of our key climate engagements are in the EU market. We read documents like best practice guidance for key sectors drafted by the IIGCC, and we continue to connect with IIGCC staff and its members on our European engagements directly, to better improve coordination on companies the IIGCC membership is also engaging.

CBIS' Managing Director of Catholic Responsible Investments is a member of ICCR's Board of Directors and various board committees, and actively participates in strategic planning for the organization. Our 2019 Executive VP was previously a Board member.

In addition, CBIS coordinates much of its engagement and policy activity with ICCR and its members to insure there is no duplication of effort or activities that will conflict. Our CRI staff were active in multiple working groups of ICCR in 2019, including Worker Rights/Human Trafficking, Climate Change, Methane, and Food and Water. We coordinate communications with ICCR in many cases, and help develop joint ICCR statements and comment letters on an ad-hoc basis.

CBIS is a long-time member of INCR&S and active in the Carbon Asset Risk Working Group, its subgroups, SICS, the Water Hub, the Just Transition Working Group, and other initiatives. We work with INCR on a host of initiatives and strategies, as climate change is a core engagement focus for us. We regularly attend CERES/INCR conferences and meetings, and have monthly correspondence with staff on various issues. We joined the Investor Initiative for Sustainable Forests in 2019.

CBIS has been a long-time member of US SIF, and routinely sponsored its bi-annual Trends Report on RI. We sponsor SIF events, and are regular speakers at SIF conferences.

We joined FAIRR in 2019 and are using its tools and research to assist in our deforestation and biodiversity/species loss engagements with companies, as well as our water risk work.

We regularly work with staff of Know the Chain regarding collaboration and coalition-building for engagements related to KTC research and benchmarking on human rights and human trafficking on high-risk sectors, and we expose many investors to the work of KTC in our presentations, panels, and communications to our investors.

We have worked with ICCR staff since the inception of the Investor Alliance to get it off the ground, provide input into its structure and focus, and done several webinars in conjunction with others to draw support and attention to the Alliance near its launch and initial stages. CBIS staff serve on the Steering Committee of the Alliance, and staff also serve on the ICT Leadership Group within the Alliance.

          CBIS has mentored other investors on shareholder resolution strategy, how to build support for shareholder resolutions, collaboration, and issue education (i.e. climate risk, biodiversity loss, human rights, human trafficking, and child exploitation online). We have organized a number of panels and webinars on child sexual exploitation online to get managers and fellow investors up to speed on these risks. We have created working groups and sharing forums on specific ESG issues, in order for fellow investors to learn, share strategies, and digest new reports. And we have briefed investment consultants and proxy advisory firms on our Catholic Responsible Investments approach, upon request, when they have sought greater insights into faith-based approaches to ESG integration. We train our new sub-advisers or new staff at existing sub-advisers on our screening and active ownership approaches. We regularly lead panel discussions at ESG or faith investor conferences. We brief investment consultants on ESG/CRI issues of interest to them, where their clients may be asking questions.

          CBIS has made presentations to universities on CRI topics, and collaborated with specific leading university researchers on their findings on child exploitation topics and discussion papers, as well as climate change academic research involving company or industry actions to mitigate emissions.

Our CEO attended a climate-focused Laudauto Si conference for several days at Creighton University in 2019 to strategize with other faith investors.

          We communicate with regulators on ESG topics, including ESG reporting consistency needs, proxy voting challenges, and shareholder rights issues. We meet with US Congressional leaders where appropriate on shareholder rights legislation or high-priority ESG/CRI topics. We convey our support for global efforts like the GRI, CDP,  SASB, TCFD, and other reporting best practices among our peers and to companies. We query our managers and select companies in our portfolio on their support for the TCFD. We discuss with our Fixed Income managers their support (or lack thereof) for the PRI's ESG and Credit Ratings statement. We update our global staff on ESG regulatory efforts happening in their respective areas.

We are part of a Shareholder Rights Working Group in the US that meets several times a month to discuss corporate, trade association, and regulatory efforts to limit shareholder participation around ESG initiatives. We have signed on to various issue-specific joint letters to companies and industries. We host ESG educational sessions for our fund investors and prospective investors. We support other shareholders (often competitors) in their arguments to have their resolutions appear on proxy ballots, and we assist our competitors and fellow shareholders to find representatives to present resolutions at annual meetings when they are unable to.

We additionally organize or speak on panels for religious finance officers, to promote RI in faith-based investments, and to educate these officers on CRI engagement issues and core RI/ESG strategies.

          We spoke at an SEC Roundtable via phone and have educated other investors on policy actions and updates regarding child  exploitation online and human trafficking.

Our focus in 2019 was on:

  • Shareholder rights, the ability to file shareholder resolutions, and resolution filing thresholds;
  • Our rights to hire proxy advsory firms for supplemental research, and our views on proposed rules that would weaken the independence of such advisors and the research they provide to us;
  • Our ability to represent our clients and fund investors in active ownership strategies;
  • Child sexual exploitation online;
  • Human trafficking;
  • Supply chain transparency.

CBIS also organized a panel in the UK  in May 2019 featuring the UK's Home Office, investors, an MP, and child protection advocates on the state of child exploitation online and regulatory and other solutions to protect children. The event was hosted by the House of Lords.
