The University of Manchester is a Higher Education Institution and has reported Assets Under Management, including both endowments and the University’s own investments and operational cash balances. The indicator selected is ‘Endowment’ because this makes up the majority of the University’s long term investments.
The University of Manchester, in its present form, was created in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). After one hundred years of working closely together both insitutions agreed to form a single university, and on 22 October 2004 they officially combined to form the largest single-site university in the UK.
The University's purpose is to advance education, knowledge and wisdom for the good of society. The University's three core goals are research and discovery, teaching and learning and social responsibility.
