CDC continues to promote the Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI) with its fund managers, both through direct discussions and through training workshops hosted by CDC.

CDC is a founding member of this Committee of the venture capital organisation. The Committee’s priorities in 2018 and 2019 have been climate and gender considerations in the private equity space. There was a climate change roundtable in 2019 where CDC was a panel speaker. The committee has also organised a practitioner’s network focussed on building skills/ network of ESG leads within African private equity.

CDC sits on a number of GIIN's working groups including Blended Finance; Alternative/Frontier Financing; HoldCo; Impact Management and Monitoring Working Groups. We are a member of their Investor Council comprising a select number of impact investors. We provide submissions to their Investor Survey annually. We also regularly feed into their publications and reports and sit and present on their panels.

CDC has also been part of GIIN's work to harmonise 2X indicators and GIIN’s IRIS+.

CDC is an active part of the working group seeking to align the environmental and social activities of European Development Finance Institutions (EDFIs). As part of this, CDC is on the E&S, DI, and climate change working groups; is leading the gender harmonisation working group; and is on the technical assistance (TA) working group. CDC sits on EMPEA's ESG Community. 

CDC is also actively involved in the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA)'s ESG working group as well as a contributor to the LP-GP roundtable series on gender.

CDC is an active participant and steering group member of the Let's Work Partnership. The partnership is coordinated by IFC, and was launched in 2013, with the aim of bringing together organisations interested in creating "more and better jobs". In addition, CDC is in the partnership's macro models working group, sharing experience and knowledge of input-output tables (used in CDC's in-house job creation methodology) with other members using similar approaches to measure their impact.

CDC is a founder signatory to the DFI Corporate Governance Initiative and a member of the DFI Corporate Governance Working Group: taking part in the bi-monthly conference calls.  CDC is actively involved in the Working Group’s Communications Committee and CDC has been the designated website administrator for the last four years.

CDC is working in close collaboration with the Global Offgrid Lighting Association (GOGLA), the industry body for offgrid solar on the development of ​impact monitoring metrics, client protection principles, e-waste, and financial sustainability. CDC teams from DI, ESG-I and the investment teams contribute to these workstreams.

CDC is a founding member of the 2x Challenge, a collaboration that has expanded to 14 DFI members to promote gender.

For the WWF programme, ESG-I staff participate in two meetings each year and provide informal feedback to the WWF on workplans, reports and strategies. https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/markets-institute-thought-leader-group

CDC's ESG-I Director is also an active member ​of the Lichtenstein Initiative for a Financial Sector Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, a public-private partnership that aims to put the financial sector at the heart of global efforts to end modern slavery and human trafficking. The project is a partnership between the Governments of Liechtenstein, Australia and the Netherlands along with the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research as well as a consortium of banks, philanthropic foundations, and associations.

          CDC hosted a number of workshops for investees, including three for GP investment managers. In 2019, the dedicated ESG-I team engaged regularly across the organization on ESG issues, such as gender, job quality and climate change. It also hosted peer training programmes, including on accident investigation, sustainable trade finance and e-waste.

          CDC co-finances and co-authors reports on an ad hoc basis alongside other development finance institutions and academic/research institutions. For example, we contributed to the 'Blueprint to mobilize finance against slavery and trafficking' alongside Muhammad Yunus, the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, the PM of Liechtenstein and many Commissioners. CDC also sponsored and spoke at World Water Week in Stockholm, and Powering Pakistan Sustainably together with HBL.

          CDC employees, including from ESG-I, BI and DI teams, spoke at a number of conferences to promote responsible investment. These include conferences run by EDFI, UNPRI, IFC, GIIN, WWF, UNEP FI and GTR on topics including e-waste, business and human rights, integrating ESG into business practices, infrastructure, water, modern slavery and human trafficking, human rights in conflict and post conflict environments, among others.

          CDC produced a number of whitepapers, briefing notes and strategies, for example a Country Profile on Ethiopia, providing guidance for businesses and investors on addressing social and human rights risks within the country, and a Good Practice Note on Responsible Venture Capital, providing a framework for VC investors to consider and manage the ESG risks and opportunities most applicable to them. CDC also produces insight reports following learnings within the impact team. These are listed in SG18.

CDC is wholly owned by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). As a result, CDC is in constant contact with public policymakers in the UK. CDC's activities also regularly involve dialogue with public policymakers and regulators in Africa and South Asia on a range of development / investment issues.

In 2018, a new role, Head of Global Affairs, was created to manage CDC's government relationships, policy influencing and strategic partnerships, particularly with the DFID Private Sector Team and the rest of the UK Government. This team now comprises 4 dedicated global affairs individuals and a team coordinator.
