  • Partners Group was one of the first private markets signatories (2008) and Adam Heltzer, Partners Group's former Head of ESG & Sustainability, was a member of the UN PRI Infrastructure Advisory Council and sat on the Supply Chain Working Group for a number of years. Adam left the firm in 2020. 
  • In 2019, we collaborated in consultations with UNPRI, including on topics like the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • In addition, Shunsuke Tanahashi, the Head of PG's Japan Office is an Advisory Board Member of the UNPRI Japan Network and serves as an appointed observer of UNPRI's Private Equity Committee.

A member of our ESG team spoke on a panel at a GRESB Infrastructure Information Session in Hong Kong. We also participated in a panel during a webinar hosted by GRESB and Mercatus on ESG reporting challenges. 

 

          Impact Management Project

Partners Group adopted parts of the IMP's framework to measure impact and was highlighted in a case study by the Impact Management Project in 2019. Partners Group collaborated with the IMP for this case study to show how our new impact-at-scale fund, PG LIFE, has successfully implemented this framework into an investable strategy. 

          Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB)

In June 2019, we hosted over 15 peers and clients in our London office for a SASB event, where we introduced the SASB principles and shared our experience incorporating them into our investment process.  

          Swiss Sustainable Finance Group

Provide a brief commentary on the level of your organisation’s involvement in the initiative. [Optional]

We became members of Swiss Sustainable Finance's (SSF) Impact Investing Working Group and SFAMA and SSF's Working Group to put together guidance on Sustainable Asset Management in Switzerland. We also wrote a chapter in the SSF Low-Carbon Economy Report, describing how PE can contribute to the transition economy. While it was written in 2019, it will be published in late Q1/Q2 2020.

We were a founding signatory of the IFC's Operating Principles for Impact Management. We produced a case study on how Partners Group implements Principle 3 of IFC's Operating Principles. We hosted an IFC event at our New York offices during UN General Assembly week and also participated in a gathering of Principles signatories in Washington D.C. in October.

Description

          During the reporting period we:
- Provided ad-hoc sessions for individual clients and consultants 
- Included ESG sessions at global and regional AGMs
- Conducted an ESG education session for Mizuho Bank employees in Tokyo
- Guest lectured at the National University of Singapore Business School and the University of St. Gallen MBA program on impact investing

Description

          We engage directly with academia to provide support when possible. In 2019, a member of our ESG team provided interviews with students from the HSLU (University in Luzern, Switzerland) and Universite Paris Dauphine to support their Master's theses.

Description

          We provided Harvard Business School with materials outlining our impact reporting approach to support their research on best practice. We also explored with them ways to prove our "impact value creation concept" – that companies who find themselves in impact-related sectors like education or health care can find real business value by leaning into their impact and integrating it into strategy and operations.

          We became founding signatories to the IFC's Operating Principles for Impact Management and provided input on the development of the principles. The goal of these principles is to develop a common framework for how investors manage and report on impact investments.

          Partners Group's ESG team members spoke at the following conferences and events in 2019: 
- PEI's Responsible Investment event in London called, SuperReturn
- GRESB's Infrastructure Information Session in Hong Kong  and subsequent webinar on ESG reporting challenges.

- IFC's impact panel at the World Bank
- SOCAP conference in San Francisco
- UNPRI's North America event
- CFA Society of New York's Annual Sustainable Investing Conference.

          Partners Group was an original sounding board member for the IFC's Operating Principles for impact Management and continues to support the implementation and roll-out of these principles as a Signatory.
