Our Private Infrastructure Asset Management (PrIAM) team is responsible for devising practical ways to systematically identify and improve performance on material ESG factors for each of their assets. As they are responsible for delivering the business plan for their assets, they are best positioned both to identify the ESG factors that are truly core to the business, and to use their influence as board members to initiate meaningful change, always supported by the ESG team.
Partners Group developed and executed ESG "dashboards" for our lead infrastructure portfolio. The dashboard went beyond simply a data collection and publishing exercise, as they strengthened our intellectual input into, as well as our level of engagement with, our assets. We identified 12 key ESG metrics for infrastructure, used shading to define relative materiality for any particular asset, boxes around the cells to show where we worked to improve in the reporting year, as well as arrows to indicate whether we were actually successful in achieving our targets. Through interactive discussions with all stakeholders, we were able to refine the definition and measurement of key ESG metrics. While discussing certain metrics, our PG colleagues and portfolio company ESG counterparts immediately acknowledged the importance of particular ESG areas and committed to improve in the following year.
