Aeon Investment Management attended a number of ESG-related events during 2019 and rigorously contributed to the debate at roundtables where PRI was present and/or hosted. As a means of ensuring we keep on par with ongoing activities and trends in ESG, we participate in a number of PRI events, regularly meet and interact with its Africa and Middle East Head, Nicole Martens. We are also members of PRI discussion forums.

Providing public policy influence on the Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment (FICA) Bill and a number of other regulatory bills and government policy.

Aeon Investment Management is one of the first signatories to be involved in public policy influence in South Africa.

Asief Mohamed, through his position as a non-executive director at ABSIP, regularly provides public policy commentary.

Aeon Investment Management submitted commentary focusing on legislation that has an influence on transformation, sustainable inclusive economic growth and a focus on an equal society. We submitted commentary in 2018 for the amendment to the Companies Act of 2008. In 2019, we shared our submissions with the PRI and the South Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister Ebrahim Patel. We have engaged with the PRI in 2019 on the commentary we provided for this submission. We are currently busy reviewing the latest amendment to the Companies Act of 2008.

Asief Mohamed, CIO at Aeon Investment Management, is a non-executive member of ASISA and the FSTC. The focus of these entities is on a contribution to legislation that has a positive influence on transformation, sustainable inclusive economic growth and driving toward a more equal society.

Description

          Aeon Investment Management attends a number of seminars and ESG-related workshops (via physical attendance or webcast). These training events are usually hosted by brokers, research houses, Bloomberg, PRI etc. Aeon Investment Management attended numerous ESG-related roadshows and events such as the JSE/PRI ESG Conference. Aeon Investment Management is also very vocal in the media and amongst peers on the importance of responsible investment and becoming signatories of the PRI.

          Aeon Investment Management provides financial assistance through the South African National Zakah Fund ("SANZAF") bursary program and independent applicants. We generally assist PhD and masters students in their academic studies by providing input for their research.

          Aeon Investment Management is very vocal in the media and amongst peers on the importance of responsible investment and becoming signatories of the PRI. The objective of attending these events is to raise awareness of how ESG performance reporting can be used by shareholders to proactively influence corporate behavior around issues of importance, but also to hear the views and recommendations of other investors.

          Aeon Investment Management promotes responsible investing in all the events and conferences that we attend. At some of these events, e.g. the CFA Finweek Collective Insight Round Table Discussion where we were part of a panel, Aeon Investment Management discussed methods and responsible investing practices that investors can adopt to avoid high risk and unfavourable investments. The objective of attending these events is to raise awareness of how ESG performance reporting can be used by shareholders to proactively influence corporate behaviour around issues of importance, but also to hear the views and recommendations of other investors.

          Aeon Investment Management has been quoted for commentary on responsible investing practices especially in relation to listed companies' operations and boards on national newspapers on multiple occasions.

Aeon Investment Management has been promoting responsible investing by attending ESG-related events and conferences. At some of these events, Aeon Investment Management was given the opportunity to present on how the company integrates ESG and engagements in their investment management. The objective of attending these events is to raise awareness of how ESG performance reporting can be used by shareholders to proactively influence corporate behaviour around issues of importance, but also to hear the views and recommendations of other investors.

We have participated in the following:

  • Collaborative engagement with other asset managers to call for South African retailers to eliminate "single-use" plastic shopping bags.
  • Collaborative engagement with other asset managers to propose for Sasol to disclose to their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and to link their emissions targets to their remuneration policy.
  • Aeon Investment Management was a panellist at the CFA ABSIP Finweek Collective Insight Round Table.

Aeon Investment Management has made various submissions to government entities e.g. we sent an engagement letter to Minister Ebrahim Patel (Department of Trade & Industry) and various other submissions to the FSTC and ASISA. Our submissions are confidential and thus only available on request.

Aeon Investment Management has engaged with public policy-makers and/or regulators on the following:

  • Financial Sector Transformation Council - Transformation within the financial sector
  • Department of Trade and Industry - Engagement on the amendment to the Companies Act
  • PWC Roundtable - ESG Engagement in the investment industry (2020)

Some of the contributions to public policy and/or legislation has not yet been made available to the public thus making the submissions confidential.
