Strategies and objectives are reviewed annually.

The Responsible Investment Position Statement is reviewed and approved at an executive level every two years.

Responsible investment processes

Key performance indicator

          Increase awareness and understanding of best practice in sustainable investment through research and training.

Progress achieved

In 2019 the BTIS investment team conducted a research project (including study tour) to improve its understanding of best practice sustainable investment processes. The project aimed to inform BT's own approach to sustainable investment and the further development of its processes.  This included a study tour to discuss best practice demonstrated by European pension funds. This information has been used by the team to inform BT's own approach to sustainable investment and in the development on BT's sustainable investment policies and processes.

          Educate and influence to make a positive contribution to society, through policy and industry advocacy, and by providing customers with sustainability information and tools.

Progress achieved

Ongoing communication program developed in 2018 continued through 2019 resulting in increased internal and external communications regarding BT's responsible investment approach. This included presentations and training for key internal product and client facing teams, to uplift understanding of sustainable investment and assist our team in communicating BT's position and approach to external stakeholders. 

Key performance indicator

          Improvement of BTs approach to asset stewardship and engagement, through policy development and implementation and collabrative engagement initiatives.

Progress achieved

In 2019, BT developed the BT Stewardship Policy which sets out BT’s approach to stewardship, including our proxy voting principles, our approach to voting and how we engage with companies. This policy:

  • Communicates to customers and other stakeholders BT's principles in relation to proxy voting matters; 
  • Details BTs' expectations of the companies in which it invests, and by doing so provide guidance to investment managers on how BT expects them to cast votes on its behalf; 
  • Provides guidance for our own decision-making for voting on contentious issues; and
  • Communicates how we approach company engagement.

The team also continued to develop BT's approach to engagement. Through involvement in the Climate Action 100+ initiative, the BT team has further developed skills and experience in collaborative engagement. This included establishing processes for engagement and improving processes for objective setting and planning.

          Improve process for assessing investment managers' approach to sustainable investment and engaging with managers regarding improvements.

Progress achieved

In 2019 BT developed an investment manager sustainable investment due diligence process for new unlisted asset strategies, including infrastructure.

Using PRI guidance as an input, this process focused on investment manager sustainable investment practices, and key ESG issues such as climate change and safety. 

The process has been used as a tool to assess managers as well as to engage regarding identified areas for possible improvement and uplift.

          Participation in effective and relevant RI initiatives and collaborative engagements

Progress achieved

  • In 2019, BT participated in a number of RI initiatives including by contributing to: 
    •  Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative (AFSI), through representation on two technical working groups (Technical Working Group 2 - Sustainable financial system and Technical Working Group 4 - Meeting community expectations ) as well as on the Coordinating Working Group.
    • Financial Service Council (FSC) ESG Working Group.
    • Responsible Investment Association of Australasia (RIAA) Human Rights Working Group.
    • Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) though representation on two working groups (Disclosure & Thought Leadership and Policy).
  • BT also continued to focus on collaborative engagement through Climate Action 100+ . 


Key performance indicator

          Encouragement and enhacement of sustainable investment practices of investment managers.

Progress achieved

Through the investment team, BT encouraged a number of its fixed interest managers to further develop and articulate their sustainable investment processes.

Through our Investment Research and Governance (IRG) team BT continues to encourage external investment managers to become PRI signatories.
