The Foundation adopts a total return approach to investment, generating the investment return from income and capital gains or losses.

The Foundation seeks to produce the best financial return within an acceptable level of risk for the bulk of the assets.

Certain restrictions apply to all investment managers such as a ban on investing directly in companies the operations of which might significantly conflict with the Foundation's mission or adversely affect our ultimate beneficiaries, people facing severe and multiple disadvantage.

The ethical investment policy is aligned to the mission through the principles of transparency, exclusion of investments that directly or indirectly harm the interests of people facing severe and multiple disadvantage accross the world, engagement with investee companies on a broad range of sustainability issues and governance (voting)

There is a standing agenda item in every Board and Committee meeting for trustees and members of the staff team to disclose any potential conflicts of interest at the start of each meeting. A record is kept of ongoing relevant interests.
