SAM 08. Percentage of externally managed assets managed by PRI signatories

08.1. Describe how you ensure that best RI practice is applied to managing your assets

Measures

During the year, HESTA undertook ESG review meetings with a number of managers across all asset classes, discussing key ESG integration highlights and challenges and engaging them on prominent ESG issues.
HESTA's Manager ESG Assessments provides a comparison of managers relative to peers and identifies strengths and weaknesses of each manager's approach that we can then engage with to improve manager performance.

Scope and process

HESTA undertakes regular ESG Assessments of its external managers. We review managers' ESG policies, ESG resources and approach to ESG integration. Following assessment managers are provided with their scores relative to peer managers and feedback on where and how they can improve.

Outcomes

During FY2018 and FY2019, we provided feedback to multiple PE managers, which led two low-scoring managers in particular, to review and improve their ESG policies and integration processes.

The scores for the two manager's shifted from 39/100 to 59/100 for one, and from 55/100 to 63/100 for the other.
