Pensioenfonds Zorg en Welzijn is a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). Before PFZW split off from PGGM the pension fund was closely involved in the creation and development of the UN PRI. Also, PGGM, on our behalf contributed to the organisation or content of events organised by the initiative + Participate/ Contribute in collaborative engagement projects

Description

          Our asset manager PGGM, on our behalf,  plays an active role in various networks and partnerships in order to encourage responsible investment and jointly bring about change. We try to mobilize the financial sector towards responsible investment, by sharing knowledge, showing best practice, and collaboration. See below a list of a few of our activities during 2019.  
1. Each year the Responsible Investment team gives a lecture regarding RI to our private market teams, offering in-depth focus on the implementation of responsible investment in daily activities. 
2. presentation for the Pensioenfederatie on OECD Guidelines  
3. Presentation EOPA regarding ESG integration.  
4. PRI webinar on the use of the taxonomy (200+ participants)  
5. training to Dufas (Dutch asset management association) and the ministry of finance and EZK on the use of the taxonomy

Description

          Our asset manager provided funding for an investor-led initiative that  will help real estate investors and managers to assess, manage and mitigate climate risk and to develop climate scenario-based strategies. The research will be carried out by the Austria-based Institute for Real Estate Economics (IIÖ), with the support of GRESB, the ESG Benchmark for Real Assets, and funded by APG, PGGM and Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM). https://www.pggm.nl/english/who-we-are/press/Pages/Investors-fund-new-initiative-to-assess-climate-change-transition-risk-in-global-real-estate-investment-portfolios.aspx

          Our asset manager PGGM works closely with Harvard, City University of New York and Wageningen University to develop models for determining the positive impact of our listed companies.

          PFZW actively promotes RI in publications, the media and on our website. We emphasize the necessity for RI with our asset manager, PGGM Investments. We also occasionally speak at conferences on RI. We also support our asset manager PGGM in taking an active role to promote responsible investment. We show leadership and mobilise the financial sector towards responsible investment, by sharing knowledge, showing best practice, and collaboration. On our behalf, our asset managers works closely with peers in a lot of RI initiatives. Via activities like events and benchmarks PGGM shows best practice and shares knowledge with other financial institutions. When assessing external managers, we take into consideration whether they are PRI signatory and/or whether they participate in other initiatives.AIso, in our engagement with companies, transparency and disclosure is an important topic: both from a risk perspective as well as positive impact.

          PFZW actively promotes RI in publications, the media and on our website. We also occasionally speak at conferences on RI. We also support our asset manager PGGM in taking an active role to promote responsible investment. In January 2018 Peter Borgdorff spoke at the Impact Investing Initiative where the focus was on impact investing and water projects in particular. In March 2018 Borgdorff, joined a panel discussion at the Sustainable Investment Forum, where he spoke about appropriate governance, needed within pension funds and major companies to shift investment funds to low carbon options and unlock the green market opportunities (Paneldiscussion: Good governance for financing the low carbon transition. In January 2018 Peter Borgdorff  spoke at the Impact Investing Initiative where the focus was on impact investing and waterprojects in particular.
In 2019 Peter Borgdorff spoke at the World Pension Summit about impact investing. Also, Peter Borgdorff was part of the 'FossielVrij' debate, regarding investments in fossil fuels.

          PRI membership is required for selection of external managers and it gives a higher score when assessing the industry initiative question in the assessment of general partners.

Description

          PFZW is taking an active role in the negotiation of the IRBC Agreement for the pension sector. IRBC Agreements promote International Responsible Business Conduct (IRBC agreements) involve partnerships between businesses, government, unions and NGOs. Together, these partners work to prevent such abuses as exploitation, animal suffering and environmental damage. Also, we responded to Environmental pressure group Fossielvrij and took part in a public debate organised by them (https://www.europeanpensions.net/ep/Environmental-group-finds-PFZWs-fossil-fuel-investments-increased.php).

          Peter Borgdorff publishes a Blog on our website every week, occassionaly on RI: in 2019 he wrote about exclusion of fossil fuel, about carbon pricing and about impact investments. Also Peter Borgdorff wrote a blog about the Sustainable Investment Forum: http://pfzw.typepad.com/ Also, IPE will publish an article on impact investments by Peter Borgdorff.
Our fiduciary manager PGGM often publishes articles on RI in the media ( see Responsible Investor: Eloy Lindeijer, Chief of Investment Management, PGGM: the challenge of allocating assets to impact' and see the PGGM website.
