During the year, our external asset consultants continued to improve the way they integrate ESG factors into manager ratings and recommendations.

State Super expanded the breadth and depth of ESG questions included within the internal due diligence questionnaire that is issued to all new managers across all asset classes in the DC portfolio.

Outcomes

A more robust approach to assessing ESG capabilities and performance is now included in the internal State Super due diligence process for new managers.

All new listed equities managers are required to provide an annual statement regarding:

  • The extent to which they took ESG factors into account in the selecting, retaining or realising investments in the portfolio;
  • How ESG issues are taken into account into the portfolio;
  • Examples of stocks that were divested, avoided or down-weighted in the portfolio because they did not meet ESG factors; and
  • Examples of stocks that were added, or up-weighted in the portfolio because they met ESG factors. 
Outcomes

Increased transparency of ESG integration by newly appointed external managers.
