Apart from integration and active ownership on behalf of our clients, while encouraging better sustainability (ESG) disclosure, Element has collaborated with other investors and promoted acceptance and implementation of the Principles through our joint engagements with investee companies and work on various ASISA committees. This will continue going forward.

Using the report to encourage companies to participate, improve water risk management and improve disclosure - particularly SA based Resource and Energy companies.

Worked with South African companies and a large South African Pension Fund to encourage the South African government to sign the EITI. Our goal has not yet been realised. The regular rotation/replacement of SA Ministers in key positions has not helped with respect to the SA Government signing/supporting the EITI.

Our work in South Africa was directly responsible for the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) committing to the initiative. GEPF is the largest pension fund in South Africa and therefore it should be able to influence other funds to join.

During 2014 David Couldridge, who was at that point an employee of Element, was elected to the Board of the ICGN at their AGM. He has since participated in all their board meetings (2 in person meetings in London and Madrid) and participated in a panel discussion on Stewardship at the Madrid conference. In addition, he is the Board liaison for the ICGN Corporate Risk Oversight Committee and serves on an ICGN Education Committee for the Board.  David's participation in ICGN continued from a firm perspective until he left Element at end August 2015.

A founding member of the forum contributing to the Code, practice notes and other initiatives.The Committee's work led to the Code for Responsible Investing in South Africa and the ongoing work has resulted in disclosure guidance and other initiatives.

A former staff member was a member of the IoDSA's Remuneration Committee Forum. Worked on Remuneration Guidance papers and participated in a number of presentations and discussions to build awareness of the guidance. Also presented on Responsible Investment to the Western Cape Chapter of the IoDSA.

The Committee's work led to the Code for Responsible Investing in South Africa and the ongoing work has resulted in disclosure guidance and other inotoatives.

Description

          Creating more ESG and RI awareness through the sharing of updated company specific ESG and RI research, and demonstrating the incorporation thereof into active investment management decisions, to clients and investors during one-on-one investor presentations, client feedback sessions or group presentations.

          Using public forums like company result presentations to ask pointed questions to management to encourage better transparency and improved responsible investment practices.

          We publish a Quarterly Newsletter that, among other topics, discloses our quarterly proxy voting record as well as providing examples and insight into our various ESG and RI engagements.

Element has a representative on the of the ASISA Fixed Income Committee. The committee engages with policy-makers and regulators on numerous topics, covering the likes of improved corporate governance, issuance of green bonds, improved market regulation and investor protection, etc.
