CDC continues to promote the Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI) with its fund managers, both through direct discussions and through training workshops hosted by CDC.

CDC sits on a number of GIIN's working groups including Blended Finance; Alternative/Frontier Financing; HoldCo; Impact Management and Monitoring Working Groups. We are a member of their Investor Council comprising a select number of impact investors. We provide submissions to their Investor Survey annually. We also regularly feed into their publications and reports and sit and present on their panels.

CDC is an active part of the working group seeking to align the environmental and social activities of European Development Finance Institutions (EDFIs). CDC sits on EMPEA's ESG Community.

CDC is also actively involved in the African Private Equity and Venture Capita Association (AVCA)'s ESG working group.

CDC is an active participant and steering group member of the Let's Work Partnership. The partnership is coordinated by IFC, and was launched in 2013, with the aim of bringing together organisations interested in creating "more and better jobs". In addition, CDC is in the partnership's macro models working group, sharing experience and knowledge of input-output tables (used in CDC's in-house job creation methodology) with other members using similar approaches to measure their impact.

CDC is a founder signatory to the DFI Corporate Governance Initiative and a member of the DFI Corporate Governance Working Group: taking part in the bi-monthly conference calls.  CDC is actively involved in the Working Group’s Communications Committee and CDC has been the designated website administrator for the last four years.

For the Global Climate Partnership Fund, which focuses on providing finance for renewable energy and energy efficiency in line with CDC's climate change policy, a director in the E&S team is on the board.

Lichtenstein Initiative on Modern Slavery

For the WWF programme, E&S staff participate in two meetings each year and provide informal feedback to the WWF on workplans, reports and strategies. https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/markets-institute-thought-leader-group

A Director for CDC's E&S is also an active member ​of the Lichtenstein Initiativefor a Financial Sector Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, a public-private partnership that aims to put the financial sector at the heart of global efforts to end modern slavery and human trafficking. The project is a partnership between the Governments of Liechtenstein, Australia and the Netherlands along with the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research as well as a consortium of banks, philanthropic foundations, and associations.

Description

          CDC hosted a number of workshops for investees, including three for GP investment managers. In 2018, CDC hosted a series of workshops for Financial Institutions, co-hosted in conjunction with IFC. The dedicated ESG team engages regularly across the organization on ESG issues, such as gender, job quality and climate change. It also hosted peer training programmes, including on food safety.

Description

          CDC co-finances and co-authors reports on an ad hoc basis alongside other development finance institutions and academic/research institutions. For example, we produced "Managing Risks Associated with Modern Slavery: A Good Practice Note for the Private Sector" alongside the EBRD, IFC and DfID, and Ergon and ETI. CDC also sponsored and spoke at a conference at the Graduate Institute in Geneva on blended finance.

          CDC collaborated on the direction and definition of academic papers linked to development impact, as well as contributing to academic lectures in London, Birmingham, and Malawi.

          CDC encourages all investees to disclose responsible investment practices through reporting to CDC and publication of information and case studies; it also works across several industry bodies and organisations to promote ESG, including GIIN.

          CDC employees, including from Environment and Social teams and Development Impact teams, spoke at a number of conferences to promote responsible investment. These include conferences run by OECD, EDFI, EBRD/FAO, EMPEA, IFU, and the Financial Times on topics including gender, health, disability, development effectiveness, modern slavery, water, and financial crime, among others.

CDC is wholly owned by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). As a result, CDC is in constant contact with public policymakers in the UK. CDC's activities also regularly involve dialogue with public policymakers and regulators in Africa and South Asia on a range of development / investment issues.

In 2018, a new role, Head of Global Affairs, was created to manage CDC's government relationships, policy influencing and strategic partnerships, particularly with the DFID Private Sector Team and the rest of the UK Government.
