The Church Pension Fund' active ownership and engagement policy is included in the Guidelines for responsible investment approved by the Pension Fund Board in 2014. The Church Pension Fund conducts both direct and indirect engagement.

In direct engagement, a representative of the Pension Fund participate in the AGMs of domestic companies or enter dialogue with company representatives. The organising of various company and investor gatherings and seminars is also a central part of direct engagement activities.

On the indirect engagement side, the Church Pension Fund co-operates with ISS-Ethix, a research-based consulting firm specialising in corporate responsibility analyses. With the help of ISS-Ethix's screening service the Pension Fund is able to identify the international norm breaches within its own investment portfolio and to survey sectors that require closer monitoring. Based on the screening results ISS-Ethix conducts engagement dialogue with the companies on behalf of the Church Pension Fund. The Church Pension Fund also participates in investor initiatives, and has for example made long-term commitments to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Montréal Carbon Pledge and Climate 100+.

In addition to these direct and indirect activities, the asset managers of the Pension Fund engage with companies according to their policies and agreements.

Since 2017 the Church Pension Fund also engages pro-actively on different sustainability themes with external consultant GES International. There are several other investors collaborating in these three theme engagements.
