08.2. Additional information. [Optional]

Our ESG integration program in listed equities (TIAA Investments) is a systematically planned multi-year effort. It encompasses close collaboration with our investment professionals in a broad manner entailing the development of an in-house proprietary research approach that combines external ESG information with internal ESG convictions, through both top-down and bottom-up techniques. While early activities focused on awareness-raising through information sessions, more recent work has entailed bringing out ESG views and convictions of investment colleagues in a more explicit manner, supplemented by relevant external research. These efforts have focused on customizing deliverables to the needs and interests of our investment colleagues, including collaboration with analysts to develop proprietary sector-specific guides on prioritized ESG themes and metrics and populating data for our top holdings in that sector, portfolio-wide ESG assessments for select PMs, and extending access to ESG tools and platforms. TIAA Investments has also played a market leadership role by actively shaping disclosure frameworks through participation in groups such as the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). Our goal in 2018 will be to expand our ESG integration and engagement activities in a more formally connected and synergistic manner and further  strengthening our investment colleagues’ convictions on material ESG themes and factors.
