BNPP IP actively participates in a handful of engagement initiatives to promote responsible investment via the PRI collaboration platform.

In 2016, we participated to the following ongoing or new initiatives:

  • PRI/UNEP FI/The Generation Foundation - Global Statement on Investor Obligations and Duties: member of working group
  • PRI – coordinated engagement on Fracking: supporting investor
  • Global investor statement on farm animal welfare: lead investor
  • Access to Nutrition Index Investor Collaborative Engagement: lead investor

 

BNPP IP is also a member of the PRI Fixed income Outreach Sub-Committee and joined in 2016 the PRI Policy Advisory Committee.

BNPP IP is a member of the Benchmark Committee since 2014. We are involvled in the methodology and the promotion of the questionnaire among the companies of the real estate sector. Using GRESB data, we have also launched a Sustainable Real Estate SRI thematic fund that is now integrated in BNPP IP's range of SRI products.

Member since July 2016. We are actively following the different debates on the following topics : green bond sectors, 'greeness', framework, impact, second opinion

Member of the IIGCC since 2003, BNPP IP actively participate in three working groups the Corporate (Carbon Asset Risk Initiative) programme, the Property programme and the Policy programme.

We are a signatory and actively collaborate in one of their initiatives for the textile sector – the investor support to the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety.

We are director of the French SIF. Various topic were addressed on 2016: production of an explaination guide for the Article 173 of the ecologial transtion lwas for a green growth, work on the French SRI and Ecological Transition labels...

We are active members at the property working group.  We have co-written papers and conduct engagement at at EU level.

BNP Paribas Group is a signatory. And BNPP IP has adopted the respect of the UN Global Compact principles as a requirement for all the companies we invest in.

We are active member of the SRI commission  and the corporate governance commission.

We also heads the AFG's ESG integration working group and the AFG's working group dedicated to the update of the SRI Transparency code to comply with the French article 173.

In 2016, we published the carbon footprint of 94 of our open-ended equity funds representing more than 70% of our total assets in equity open-ended funds.

We also committed to reduce the carbon risks in our investments by applying a strict coal-free policy to our SRI funds, developing green financing and strengthening our engagement and voting as regards climate change.

BNP Paribas Investment Partners founded a sub-group in France - the “g-20” - that aims at determining how the challenges involved in obtaining long-term financing for the energy efficiency in the building, industry and SME sectors might be overcome.

          Series of ESG-focus events in Europe and Asia + commercial events with clients to promote our responsible investment achievements + ESG integration + social impact investment.

We have an in-house Investment Academy that provides training to clients as well as to our staff. Every year, at least one session is dedicated to responsible investment.

Throughout 2016, we have spoken, and chaired numerous panels, on responsible investment in Europe – from Spain to Austria - , Asia – Japan, Hong Kong – and in the US.

As an example, we have sponsored and/or organised conferences on Sustainability in Asia. In 2016, we held events in Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore e.g. http://apac.bnpparibas/en/sff/.

BNP Paribas Investment Partners has equally been a contributor for the PRI and UNEP-FI’s report – “Investor Obligations and Duties in Six Asian Markets”, which was launched at “PRI in Person” Conference in Singapore in September 2016.

We participated in the PRI’s “Fiduciary Duty in the 21st Century” roundtable in Hong Kong as a panelist and participated in the “PRI in Person 2016” Conference in Singapore in September where our Chief Investment Officer in Asia Pacific spoke at a panel session on “ESG in Islamic Finance”.

BNP Paribas Investment Partners also sponsors and participates to the Novethic event in Paris aiming at influencing investors to integrate ESG issues in their practices and discusses recent development of the responsible investment market internationally.

We have a dedicated SRI newsletter which is published twice a year and distributed to our clients and staff.


SG 11. Dialogue with public policy makers or standard setters

In 2016, we continued to have an ongoing dialogue with policymakers particularly in three areas:

1.           Climate change overall policy – we are active members of the IIGCC policy group (please see www.iigcc.org/programmes/programme/policy)

2.           Green building policy and financing in France and EU in general – EEFIG ‘g20” group and UNEP FI working group (www.eefig.eu)

3.          Responsible Investment more generally with French government through our membership at the AFG. (www.afg.asso.fr)

 

We have continued to support pro-sustainability policy by signing and commenting numerous letters to policymakers and regulators e.g. US SEC and the Dodd Franck Act section 1502.
