05.1. Indicate if and how frequently your organisation sets and reviews objectives for its responsible investment activities.

The ACTIAM Selection Committee meets at least once every quarter. In this meeting, besides reviewing new proposed policies, the engagement progress, an overview of the investment universe screening, investor statements and official letters are among the standard agenda items of these meetings.

Responsible investment processes

Key performance indicator

          Execution of marketing and communication plan, to which ESG is a large contributor.
        

Progress achieved

To improve communication about ESG within the organisation, ACTIAM:

- Improved social media use (most content is about ESG)
- Continued ESG communication on the intranet (incl. mother company)
- Presented about ESG in quarterly employee meetings
- Communicated about joint initiatives, such as PCAF.
- Communicated about investor statements such as Investor Statement on Arctic Oil Exploration, Business Accord on Natural Capital, etc.
- Created an infographic about the focus themes and related targets, which was displayed life-size throughout the company.
- Held combined ESG and PMT meetings about ESG.
- Helped one of its clients setting up an internal training on responsible investment. Relationship managers have to pass to be able to discuss ESG / SRI with clients.

Key performance indicator

          Engagement progress is one of the key KPIs for the ESG team.
        

Progress achieved

Engagement progress was improved in 2016 compared to previous years. Engagement progress is measured in milestones and reported on in the quarterly ESG reports as well as the annual report. 87 milestones were achieved in 2016. We also developed and started using a new database for engagements and progress. And in 2016, an external provider was hired to conduct a share of the engagements, to increase the amount of engagements and impact. These engagements are not included in the above milestone progress.

          ESG integration has been a KPI for ACTIAM over the last years.
        

Progress achieved

ESG scores were implemented in ACTIAM's systems and, where applicable, mandates with clients were adjusted. Some portfolios need to achieve an ESG score which is at least higher than the ESG score of the benchmark. This was achieved in 2016 for all relevant portfolios.

          Improved communication of ESG activities outside the organisation

          As part of the execution of the marketing communication plan.
        

Progress achieved

In 2016, ACTIAM:

Spoke at 37 conferences/seminars regarding responsible investment, impact investing, green bonds and other ESG topics.
Published or was mentioned in 108 articles and columns.

ESG activities were actively communicated on social media, our website and our intranet. We have developed an infographic which shows our focus themes, related targets and relevant tools, as well as our overall target of achieving a liveable world and contributing to the UN SDGs.

Financial performance of investments

Key performance indicator

          Performance of the internally managed active fund (Euro Aandelenfonds) and active equity fund is a standard KPI for the ESG and portfoliomanagement team.

2016 performance was 2,33%, benchmark performance 2,58%.

          -25% of carbon footprint in 2015 (compared to 2010).
        

Progress achieved

We started with the intensity measurement of our European active portfolio. In 2016, we achieved a 7% reduction of intensity compared to 2010. In our Q4 2016 report, we have published an overview of the absolute emissions of all investment funds and relevant benchmarks. We will calculate the carbon intensity of all investments this year.

We are launching Platform Biodiversity Accounting Financials with a Dutch bank and continuing to look for other collaborations and initiatives on RI issues.

  • Increased communication to clients about RI cases (directly and support in communication for clients' clients).
  • Added carbon footprint of funds
  • Added new insights into portfolio, such as amount of companies with climate policies vs. the benchmark
  • Added insight into companies with highest and lowest ESG scores
  • Added report of investor engagement trip to Indonesia and MAlaysia
  • Actively used website and social  media for ESG examples
